A modular paneled green-wall system that scales up and down to introduce bio-diverse plant life into various kinds of dense urban areas.

My partner and I designed this green wall panel system with removable HDPE plastic planting pots to bring green wall cultivation down to a homeowner’s scale, as well as creating a canvas for vertical plant and vegetable gardening, to make home gardening more accessible for residents and homeowners living in urban areas with limited outdoor space.

The system itself consists of modular panels made with an aluminum framework, a mounting surface, a drainage system, as well as a compacted growing substrate.

We opted for aluminum as the skeletal framework material for its affordability and lightweight properties, and Bio-Char for the growth substrate, due to its porous and moisture-retaining properties. BioChar consists of any form of biomass (wood, wood materials, bark, grasses, agricultural & industrial byproducts) post-pyrolysis procedure, and is a renewable and beneficial form of growing substrate that removes net carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the atmosphere.

Another important consideration was the removability of of plastic planting ledges. Constructed with HDPE recycled plastic, we chose these for their waterproof, durable, and overall weatherproof qualities; The removable aspect making the separation of plastic and aluminum easier for end of life disposal and recycling.
